SANTO DOMINGO.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) announced yesterday, Tuesday, the launch of the second phase of the "Awareness for Life, Christmas and New Year 2025-2026" operation, with the objective of preventing incidents and ensuring a rapid response to emergencies during the end-of-year festivities.
In a press release, the COE explained that it will reinforce the prevention and assistance team in the most vulnerable areas of the country, with the purpose of reducing traffic accidents and cases of poisoning during the New Year holiday. Second phase of the "Awareness for Life" operation: COE intensifies prevention on highways and in high-risk areas.
According to the institution, the road safety system was restored on the main sections of highways, freeways and roads of the country.
The document specified that for these purposes 48,470 collaborators from first response organizations will be deployed, including brigade members, doctors, paramedics, military personnel, police officers, rescue specialists and volunteers.
Likewise, the COE indicated that 1,301 fixed and mobile first aid stations will be set up in locations identified as having the highest number of incidents in previous operations.
Available resources
The agency detailed that the operation includes the redistribution of 250 ambulances, in addition to 14 vehicle extraction teams, 44 rescue units, 21 mobile workshops, two pre-hospital care centers and three helicopters, the latter provided by the Ministry of Defense.
Transit
The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) announced that it will implement strategic measures to regulate the circulation of cargo vehicles throughout the national territory, including permits for the Restricted Access Zone (ZAR), from Tuesday, December 30th to Friday, January 2nd, 2026.
Likewise, the director of the COE, Juan Manuel Méndez García, urged the population to comply with the safety measures established by the central government:
“Prudence began to make a difference during the Christmas holiday, and we expect even more so at the end of this year. These last few hours of 2025 are a good time to reflect and give thanks for life and the blessings received, as well as to set new goals for the coming year,” said Méndez García.
First phase assessment
The COE reported that the first stage of the operation concluded with 11 people dead in traffic accidents and 293 alcohol poisonings, including minors between 3 and 17 years old.
The institution reminded that the second phase of the operation runs from Tuesday, December 30 at 2:00 p.m. until Thursday, January 1, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.
